תקציר:
ברונו בן השמונה חי חיים מוגנים כבנו של קצין נאצי אשר קידומו מנתק את המשפחה מביתם הנוח בברלין אל אזור מרוחק, בו לילד הבודד אין מה לעשות ועם מי לשחק. משועמם וסקרן, ברונו מפיר את האיסורים החוזרים של אמו שלא לחקור את הגינה האחורית בבית החדש, והוא מטייל אל "חווה" שנמצאת לא רחוק.
שם הוא פוגש את שמואל, נער בגילו של ברונו, שחי בקיום מקביל וזר מצדה השני של גדר התיל הגבוהה. המפגש של ברונו עם הנער בפיג'מת הפסים מעיר אותו מתמימותו ופוקח את עיניו אל זוועות עולם המבוגרים שסביבו.
אך לידידות האמיצה שצומחת בין שני הנערים תוצאות מחרידות…
